REGIONAL CAREERS

Nuclear

The SRSCRO region of Georgia and South Carolina has the most unique nuclear industry capabilities in the nation.  This region is at the forefront of new nuclear power production, environmental stewardship, innovative technology and national security.

New facilities and long-term missions at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site require a highly skilled workforce that includes more than 11,000 people. Also, long-term nuclear workforce demand is growing in the region as new nuclear power reactors are under construction at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, GA.  Thousands of well-paid, highly-skilled workers live in the SRSCRO region because of the nuclear industry sector.

In response to the community’s unique and growing nuclear workforce needs, the SRSCRO implemented a unified strategy through our Nuclear Workforce Initiative (NWI®).  Since 2009, we proactively engage private and government employers, educational institutions and economic development entities to work as partners.  The result has been ongoing education and advocacy for nuclear workforce development through SRSCRO-sponsored groups such as the NWI® Staffing Committee and Nuclear Science Week Regional Coordination Committee.  The SRSCRO is actively involved on local and national workforce committees in support of nuclear workforce needs.

NWI® activities are producing big results that benefit the region’s multiple industry sectors through STEM Outreach and Grant Partnerships.
